Wildlife:

Dovrefjell is most famous not only for its wild breed of musk-oxen, but also  for the last genetically original breed of reindeer in Europe. The last count that was taken showed that there were 108 musk oxen and about 4500 reindeer. For those guests interested in studying or photographing these animals, we suggest joining one of the musk ox safaris that are led by experienced mountain guides. We must in this same relationship not forget the “mountain’s garbage remover” , as the scavenging wolverine is often called. This creature has his “protected home” on the wide expanse of the  Dovrefjell plateau

For our bird-lovers we suggest a trip to the bird preserve at Fokstumyra.

Gjevilvatnet Lake:

 Gjevilvassdalen Vally

Gjevilvassdalen Valley is the gateway to the magical and enchanting natural beauty of Trollheimen (“The Home of the Trolls”). Here you will discover a carefully marked network of trails that will lead the wanderer from one cabin to another.

Trollheimen II is a tour boat, which sails twice daily from Fosen to Vassendsetra at the end of Gjevilvatnet Lake. Gjevilvatnet is 20 km long, so a boat ride and dairy mountain farm visit will take several hours.

Vang Burial Grounds:

If you drive from Oppdal in the direction of Sunndalsøra, you will come to an exit, which says “Vang gravfelt” (Vang Burial Grounds). The Burial grounds, which date back to the Iron Age, have over 700 burial mounds, most from the Viking Age.

Winter:

Winter holiday in Oppdal is something quite special because the district offers its guests one of Norway’s largest alpine complexes - 15 km2 area with 16 ski lifts and 80 km of prepared ski trails with varying degrees of difficulty.

For those who would like to hike in the beautiful countryside, we have 150 km of prepared and marked trails.

Ice Climbing:

Along Highway E6 in Drivdalen Valley there are many brooks and waterfalls that are frozen in winter. Here is the chance for ice climbing enthusiasts to sharpen their skills and talent.

Put on a pair of good mountain boots and you can leave directly from the camping place and follow the well-marked hiking trails to Blakkhaugen Hill and Trondfjellet Mountain. Along the way you will encounter a u-shaped valley (Heggvollbotnen) surrounded on three sides by vertical mountain drops. With some luck you may, in the spring, catch a glimpse of a pair of golden eagle feeding their young. These golden eagles have had their nest along the southern wall for the past 8 years.

Arriving at Trondfjell Mountain you will find a variety of hunting fences, ditches and well-preserved bow entrenchments which were used for hunting in the Middle Ages or perhaps even earlier.

Another trail we would recommend is the old dairy mountain-farm road to Åmotsdalen. Inquire at the reception desk for more information about this trail.

Fishing:

Over one hundred mountain lakes, brimming with the finest char and trout, provide a unique opportunity for all fishing enthusiasts. In addition to this we must not forget the famous Driva and Åmot Rivers.

We also recommend a trip to Sunndalsøra for some saltwater fishing.  It’s just 72 km from Magalaupe Camping and then down to the fjord.

Flora:

Dovrefjell has been famous for its rich flora since the 18th Century. High up on Dovrefjell National Park you will find Scandinavia’s largest variety of mountain flora. At the botanical garden of Kongvoll you can see plants in their natural growing environment. Many common mountain plants, along with some very rare species, grow in the mountain garden.

Minerals:

Geologically, Oppdal is an area which is unique in its mineral resources and has an interesting geological history. Thus far 120 different minerals have been found, two of which are still unknown new minerals. In connection to this we should mention the "Isbrekkitten” found on the northside of Åmotsdalen Valley. There has been some panning for gold in this area. No one has thus far discovered the main artery even though a Canadian firm has done some drilling in the area. We highly recommend a guided tour of Oppdal’s geological wonders.
